a group of boats on the water

Lost in a Sea of Entrepreneurs

November 21, 20252 min read

I attended a CEO Power Hour that's hosted by the Female Entrepreneur Association (FEA), and let me tell you, imposter syndrome set in big time. I felt like I was in a sea, surrounded by entrepreneurs, but they all had their own boats, and I didn’t. I felt like I was just trying to keep my head above water.

I started to feel really distressed by this visualization, and then that wise inner voice stepped in and helped me see some logic. In my head, I heard myself say, “Wait a minute, if I’m in this sea of entrepreneurs, then I must have a boat because I have a business.”

I then saw myself no longer in the water but in a tiny little dinghy. Once again that inner voice chimed in, “Hold up! If I’ve been at this for years, then I’m in something bigger and more stable.” That's when a long aluminum canoe popped into mind. I thought, “Yes, that’s it.”

I realized that I’d been trying to navigate my canoe all these years with just one oar. By joining FEA, I gained my other oar and could start rowing in the direction I wanted.

It came to me that as I learn how to automate and involve technology, my canoe would become a motorboat. And when I have a bigger boat that can hold more people (clients), I may at some point take on some crew (employees).

It was the re-framing I needed. I am in this sea of entrepreneurship, and I am determined to upgrade my boat as I grow. I'm so grateful for that precious other oar and for the encouragement and support coming from the other women in their own boats, yachts, and cruise ships. It really is special to be a part of this amazing fleet of women entrepreneurs and solopreneurs.

What kind of "boat" do you find yourself on currently? Even if you feel like the tide is carrying you in the wrong direction or your navigation system is on the fritz, there's always help available. You just need to call the "coast guard" (a coach, accountability partner, or community) so you can course correct. And remember, a rising tide lifts all boats. We're in this together.
