Person meditating with light in center; titled Intuition: Your Inner GPS

Your Intuition Is Your Best GPS

September 08, 20267 min read

I had just gotten engaged to someone I’d known for 20 years. We lived in different countries, and I was back in his visiting close friends of mine. We started making plans, and he kept trying to convince me to stay and not go back to New York, where I needed to wrap up my job.

While I was very caught up in the excitement of this new chapter of my life, something kept telling me to go back to New York, that I needed space to see things more clearly. I told him that I had to return to see out the rest of my contract.

Back in New York, I was envisioning our home together. I was trying to figure out what I’d do with my belongings. I was creating my to-do lists. I was set on moving once my contract was up. Yet, when I spoke to a few friends, I could hear the doubt in my voice.

It’s a funny thing how time and space will often bring clarity. There were red flags, quite a few in fact, and they were getting harder to ignore.

He came to visit me, and I noticed something was off. There were things that just weren’t adding up. It wasn’t long after his visit that I received a text that wasn’t meant for me. He must have confused our names and sent her message to me. I ended the relationship right then and there.

I managed to dodge the proverbial bullet because I chose to pay attention to the gentle nudges that were telling me to take a step back, to pay attention, and to question what wasn’t making sense. Had I gone through with it, I know that I would have been miserable.

If you ask AI where intuition comes from, it currently says that it’s a fast mental process and that it comes from your brain. I disagree wholeheartedly. There’s a saying by Jiddu Krishnamurti that intuition is a whisper of the soul, and I think that’s more congruent.

Your soul is connected to your Highest Self, the part of your soul that remains in Spirit Realm. It’s the part of you that knows exactly who you are and why you’re here. It sees the entire picture of your current incarnation. It always wants what’s best for you, and it does its best to guide you - through intuition.

Society teaches us to use reason and logic - to rely on the brain. I agree that logic has its place, but I also recognize that it's tainted by our preconceptions, our past experiences, our conditioning, our subconscious and limiting beliefs, and also by our fear.

Your brain’s reasoning is trying to guide you through the dense forest, yet your Highes Self has the bird's-eye view. It knows where you need to go, and it triggers your internal guidance system - your intuition - to help you get there. It may nudge you towards something or it may even nudge you away.

The mind wants to keep you safe, whereas the soul wants you to step out of your comfort zone and grow. Your soul wants what's best for you, and it demands expansion, but your mind will keep you living and playing small if you heed it over your intuition.

Until you start really listening, your intuition is a quiet voice. Its nudges are often gentle and sometimes barely perceivable unless you really pay attention. Of course there are occasions when it will get loud enough to grab your attention, especially when it comes to danger - you may feel your skin crawl, an uneasy feeling in the gut, or an inner voice that gives you some kind of instruction, like don’t go down that alley.

Sometimes you may get intuitive nudges where you’re not sure what they mean. You may even second-guess your intuition, especially when the mind takes over. What should you do in those cases? In part, you’re taking a leap of faith to trust your intuition. Follow it and see where it takes you. Even when it seems to lead you down an uncomfortable road, it’s always for a reason, and it’s always for you, not against you.

It’s important to remember that your intuition wants what’s best for you. It knows what your soul wants to experience for growth. The paths it will lead you down might not be the fastest, easiest, or most comfortable ones, but they’re the paths that your soul longs to take.

Do you ever find yourself making a pros and cons list when you’re faced with a big decision? I know I used them a lot in the past before I was more connected with my intuition. I wish I’d known then what I know now.

Try this exercise the next time you need to make an important decision:

  1. Take a piece of paper and draw a horizontal line across the top of your paper and then a vertical line down the middle.

  2. On the left side, write the heading LOGIC, and on the right side, write the heading INTUITION.

  3. In the left-hand column write down all of your reasoning and the why behind it around the decision you’re trying to make. Let the left side of your brain access its logic.

  4. In the right-hand column, ask your heart/soul what it thinks, and write down any feelings, thoughts, or images that come up. Here, you’re applying the right side of your brain. Be open and curious; some of it might not make sense in the moment.

  5. Look at both columns and see where you feel most guided. Circle the words/sentences that stand out to you and feel right.

Come from the heart, the true heart, not the head. When in doubt, choose the heart. This does not mean to deny your own experiences and that which you have empirically learned through the years. It means to trust yourself to integrate intuition and experience. – Brian L. Weiss

I recently had to make a very big decision in a very short amount of time. My head was telling me to not even consider what I was thinking about doing. It brought up my painful past and filled me with thoughts that stemmed from fear. It was very convincing. Yet, my heart was excited. It was my intuition that led me to this new path in the first place. I tapped into my intuition using muscle testing and found that my soul wanted me to follow my heart.

If you find you’re always second-guessing yourself, have a hard time making decisions, or find yourself torn between your head and your heart, muscle testing is an excellent way to help you tap into your inner knowing.

Muscle testing is applied kinesiology. You can ask your inner wisdom yes/no questions and see its response through your physical body. Muscle strength stands for yes, and muscle weakness stands for no. It’s actually quite easy to learn how to muscle test, though there are some parameters you need to be aware of before jumping into it. If you’re curious about learning how to tap into your inner knowing through muscle testing, I offer a beginner’s training that will get you started. You can find out more here.

sign that says follow your intuition

Intuition is ever-present, and everyone has access to their inner wisdom. There is a difference between being an intuitive and having intuition. Everyone has intuition, but not everyone is connected to extrasensory senses, such as clairvoyance, clairsentience, claircognizance, or clairaudience. You can connect to your intuition through meditation, guided visualizations, muscle testing, or using a pendulum.

It’s about getting present, engaging it, and learning its signals. If the hair on your skin raises, you know to get super present and pay attention. If you feel a pull in your stomach, your intuition might be knocking. You might feel a flutter or a tightness in your chest; you’re being signaled to center and check in. Your intuition communicates with you; it’s up to you to focus and pay attention.

I’ll leave you with two parting questions:

  1. When was the last time you used your intuition?

  2. How do you plan to incorporate it more into your life?

Your intuition is your inner GPS; it knows exactly where to take you, what roads to avoid, and how to reroute when you’ve gone off track. It knows the direction you need to go, so I hope you’ll try allowing it to guide you more often in life.
